Johnson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 6 against the Giants. It’s a credit to Johnson for his improvements through the summer that he earned a job and ultimately played four games in Develin’s absence. Even with that, Belichick said they never would have imagined Johnson sticking around when they first saw him in the spring. Jakob Johnson (signed through 2020): Born in Germany, Johnson arrived through the league’s international program and would have been granted an exemption to remain on the practice squad for the entire season. Develin had his two best seasons in 20, so his career was trending in the right direction before the serious injury. Develin stayed with the team all season, just as he did when he was on IR in 2015, and hopes to continue playing in 2020. James Develin (signed through 2020): The 2017 Pro Bowler was placed on injured reserve in September due to a muscle and disc issue in his upper back and neck. He was second on the Pats with 72 receptions, 645 receiving yards and five touchdowns, and he has a $4.6 million cap hit in the final year of his deal. James White (signed through 2020): It always feels like White is never used enough. Michel’s yards per carry dropped from 4.5 to 3.7, though. He also scored a career-best seven touchdowns and played a full 16 games after missing three as a rookie. Sony Michel (signed through 2021): The 2018 first-round pick had 1,006 yards from scrimmage, which was more than his rookie season, when he had 981. At any rate, it was a redshirt year for Harris, who had a solid offseason program and start to training camp but had a couple of injuries in August and couldn’t make up ground on the depth chart. A dozen of those were healthy scratches, and a hamstring injury from practice accounted for the rest, though it’s hard to imagine he would have been active if healthy. He has a $4 million cap hit in 2020, but the Pats could save $3 million if they part ways, which is conceivable if they need to find money and want to elevate Damien Harris.ĭamien Harris (signed through 2022): The third-round pick was inactive a team-high 15 times in 17 games. Rex Burkhead (signed through 2020): Burkhead ran really well after returning from an early three-game absence with a foot injury. More than anything, Bolden’s presence and leadership were felt on the kicking units after a season away. Running backs (5)īrandon Bolden (signed through 2020): Tremendous special teamer who had the occasional offensive cameo. Did he show enough to Belichick to earn the keys to the kingdom if negotiations go wrong with Brady? That question will be answered in some fashion in the very near future. Jarrett Stidham (signed through 2022): The fourth-rounder out of Auburn was tremendously impressive throughout the spring and summer. Kessler, a third-round pick out of USC in 2016, had a nice start to his career with the Browns before falling off due to injuries, so his development will be worth watching if he sticks around for camp. After parting with Brian Hoyer - who was set to return later in September if the Colts hadn’t shocked him with a three-year, $12 million contract - the Patriots wanted a third quarterback to spell Brady at practice. The guess is Brady returns to the Patriots for another season, but we already wrote more than 1,300 words this week on the complicated layers of the upcoming process.Ĭody Kessler (signed through 2020): The third-string quarterback had two stints with the Patriots this season but was a healthy scratch for all 12 games. Tom Brady (contract set to void March 18): Brady dealt with an array of injuries late in the season, including notable foot and elbow ailments that required extensive amounts of treatment every week, which explains some of those uncharacteristic bouts of inaccuracy.
